Description

Shepherd’s Cross, an Animal Welfare Approved working sheep farm, is pleased to announce the return of its highly anticipated Annual Sheep Shearing School. This hands-on educational event will be held across two sessions in April 2026, offering participants a rare opportunity to learn the ancient trade of shearing from world-class industry professionals.

Expert Instruction & Heritage Skills
The workshop features a trio of instructors:
• Israel Vasek: A professional shearer from South Dakota who shears over 10,000 head of sheep annually. Carrying on a multi-generational family tradition, Mr. Vasek is renowned for his conscientious and respectful handling of livestock.
• Dr. Diane Dickinson: A licensed veterinarian and agriculturalist with over 40 years of experience. Dr. Dickinson provides a holistic perspective on animal husbandry, blending sustainable practices with global and Biblical agricultural insights.
• Peter Dickinson: Mr. Dickinson has been shearing his own flock for over 30 years.

2026 Course Schedule
• Session 1: April 9, 10, & 11 (Thursday – Saturday)
• Session 2: April 13, 14, & 15 (Monday – Wednesday)
• Time: 8:30 am – 3:30 pm daily

Comprehensive Hands-On Curriculum
Participants will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment upon completion of the three-day course. The curriculum covers:
• Effective Shearing Techniques: Direct, hands-on experience shearing live sheep.
• Animal Welfare: Low-stress handling methods in an Animal Welfare Approved environment.
• Equipment Care: Proper maintenance and consultation on shearing tools.
• Fiber Arts History: Practical technology and history of fiber processing.

Sustainable Agriculture in Action
Shepherd’s Cross is more than a classroom; it is a center for sustainable living. The farm hosts a mini-wool mill on-site where fiber—free of chemicals and hormones—is processed from their own free-range flock. Attendees are also encouraged to explore the Educational Farm Museum, the Bible Garden, and the Farm Store, which features handmade gifts and wares from local artisans.
